iPhone365 #39: 日本語

I just reconnected online with an old friend in Okinawa. Since my Japanese is much better than his English, our correspondence tended to stay mainly on his side of the court. My brain is now getting a lot of language weightlifting... ichi, ni, san, shi... It's a good thing I never got rid of my books!

iPhone365 #37: o.j.t. - on the job texting

I couldn't help it -- I just had to take this picture and post it. As I sat at the station for about 10 minutes waiting for the trolley, these two transit officers stood there texting on the job. I can understand if they had to send one or two messages, but they barely moved the whole time, oblivious to their surroundings. They didn't even look up when my phone made the loud clicking sound when I took this picture (I forgot to mute it).

iPhone365 #36: too long

I loaded today's dirty dishes into the dishwasher. Still not full. It takes me more than a week to fill and run. Am I really saving water since I quick-rinse everything before putting in the dishwasher?

iPhone365 #35: tapsilog

Going to Zarlito's has become a tradition for me and Eddie whenever he is in town. Inexpensive, greasy, high-calorie food is the norm with Filipino food, and this place offers it in platefuls in a no-frills venue where you can watch TFC (The Filipino Channel) while eating and buy a phone card on your way out.

I usually get the "tapsilog", a combination plate of beef strips (tapa), fried rice (sinangag), and fried eggs (itlog). Originally sold back home as a breakfast fare, it evolved into an after-midnight/after-disco meal, and is now served as an easy anytime no-need-to-think meal.

iPhone365 #34: at the con

One thing I like about the Comic-Con is that one can be whomever one wants to be, even for a few days: a hero, a villain, or something in between.

iPhone365 #33: comic-con

I thought I would post a picture of costumed conventioneers that I saw wandering all over the city, but when I saw this row of palm trees while waiting to cross Harbor Drive to meet my friend at his hotel, I knew this had to be today's iPhone shot and that costumed crusaders would have to wait for another day.

iPhone365 #32: monthly ritual

Eli runs around like crazy after I give him a bath and his monthly medications for fleas and heartworm. As usual, he soon heads for his pillow without any prompting from me, all refreshed and tired, ready to go to sleep.

iPhone365#30: junk food

I usually set aside Fridays for junk food for lunch: I call it my "fry" day.

Today, however, I couldn't wait for four more days. I had to go and satisfy my craving for grease and salt.

Maybe it was because I started my day at 5 a.m. Maybe because I was stressed by issues at work that, in reality, did not have any bearing on me. Maybe it was because I started eating junk food early today.

Or maybe I just wanted a cheeseburger and some fries.

iPhone365 #28: waiting

Standing in the shade to escape Sunday's oppressive heat, the Gay Men's Chorus of San Diego wait for the cue to get up and perform at the Pride Festival.

iPhone365 #27: footbridge

On my way to our designated ticket-selling spot for the Pride Festival, I decided to park north of Washington Street so I could, for the first time, walk on the Vermont Street footbridge. The old one, demolished in 1989, was a wood trestle bridge. The new one, completed in 1995, is steel and concrete.

It's always refreshing to get a new perspective on something one sees everyday.

iPhone365 #26: out & about

I am finally able to go to work today. All my coworkers asked the same question: "Why didn't you just wait until Monday to come back to work?!"

I had only two words to say to them: cabin fever.

iPhone365 #25: keys

I spent forty minutes looking for my car key this evening. I was going to be late for rehearsal. The more frustrated I became, the less I could "see."

When I decided to skip rehearsal and just stay home, I found it. In a spot I had walked past maybe four or five times. Go figure.

iPhone365 #23: out again

Finally I am able to walk and sit outside without much discomfort. The television was starting to be as boring as the ceiling. I'm hoping a little fresh evening air will do me some good.

iPhone365 #22: medicine man

A visit to the doctor today reassured me that my back pain is STILL a muscular problem and not a disc issue.

iPhone365 #21: another day

Still in bed. My back is a little better, but not well enough for prolonged standing and walking. I guess it means more TV tomorrow.

iPhone 365#20: back in bed

I spent the whole day staring at the ceiling (picture) because I pulled my back gardening in the morning. I would rate this one an intensity 5 (out of 10).

Of course I watched TV, too, but I couldn't finish a single episode of any show because the muscle relaxant makes me drowsy. Not even the most exciting infomercial could do it.

iPhone365 #19: used clothes

There was literally a ton of used clothes waiting for us. I went with my company's team of volunteers to the new Veterans Village to help sort and size clothing that will be distributed to homeless veterans in the upcoming annual Operation Stand Down which provides these folks with access to food, clothing, medical, and mental health services.

It amazed me what people buy and "throw away": there were so many almost-new expensive brand-name and foreign (Italian shirts and suits) that I wouldn't mind taking home and wearing. I'm sure I wasn't the only one who thought this because I heard everyone saying, "Oh, this is really nice!" every now and then throughout our shift.

iPhone365 #18: lost

What happens when you nerd-out on your iPhone? You don't pay attention to what is going on.

I was waiting for my trolley and reading the news on my phone. A trolley arrived, I got on and continued reading. After two stops I looked out the window. I had taken the wrong line!

So here I stand at the Spring Street station waiting for the next trolley to take me two stations back.

iPhone365 #17: lenses

I rediscovered my antique shop/garage sale treasures early this evening when I was looking for a book. The middle one is a Kodak "pocket" camera. Trenchcoat pocket, maybe.

Then I looked at my iPhone. We have definitely come a long way in less than a hundred years.

iPhone365 #16: i see cells

Cell. Nucleus. Cytoplasm. Normal. Atypical. Malignant. I look at them everyday. Sometimes they fascinate me, sometimes they scare me. But always, always they are beautiful.

iPhone365 #15: monday evening routine

Blueberry oat bar. Coffee. Or sometimes chai latte. This is my pitstop between work and rehearsal on Monday evenings.

iPhone365 #14: lazy day

For the first time in a very long time, we spent our Sunday the way it's supposed to be: unplanned and completely free. No events to go to, no work to catch up with, no home projects to finish.

We started the day with a full brunch (pictured: my one-day-late independence day waffle). For the rest of the day we just sat around doing basically nothing (read: iPhone, internet, and a smattering of pseudo-political talk).

A quick trip to Cold Stone broke the day's rhythm and gave Daniel a chance to eat his two-month quota of ice cream.

I can't complain about how perfectly lazy it was.

iPhone365 #13: polvoron

After I did my 3-mile run this morning, I opened the fridge for a glass of water. Somehow a piece of polvoron wrapped in bright yellow cellophane ended up in my hand before I closed the fridge door.

What is polvoron? I define it as little pieces of heaven wrapped in tissue paper or cellophane. The Filipino version is made with flour, sugar, milk, butter, and ground nuts -- peanuts, cashew, almonds.

And so I ate it and replaced all the calories I just lost. With polvoron, it's worth it.

iPhone365 #10: audiobook

I started listening to a coworker's audiobook this morning, something which the nature of my work allows me to do. I got so much into it that I couldn't stop and had to take the last two discs home with me.
