iPhone365 #70: again...

Curtains are the most exciting thing I look at whenever I'm on bedrest because of my #%*^ bad back. I've been told to strengthen my core muscles and I do work on it, really. I guess they're not strong enough. Or maybe, this time, I did too much too soon. But whatever the case might be, all I know is this: it's aggravating.

iPhone365 #69: remote controls

Remote controls were supposed to make life simpler. Mine has been made complicated: one makes me see the pictures, one makes me hear the sound, and one makes me choose which picture to watch.

iPhone365 #68: estrogen

I always have to stop in awe whenever I see crystallized estrogen on the slides that I'm examining. It's great that I found a way to shoot pictures with my iPhone through the microscope objective.

iPhone365 #67: don't leave me

A struggling geranium shows off a single brave bunch of blossoms as if to tell me to take it with the rest of the plants that I had selected for relocation.

iPhone365 #66: call the vet first

I drove all the way across town to pick up some meds for my dog, only to find out that they are closed on Wednesday afternoons. I should have called first. And yes, my veterinarian's name is Dr. Catt.

iPhone365 #65: pizza by candlelight

The food doesn't really matter. Backyard dinner by candlelight with good company like Alex and Angel is always fun.

iPhone365 #64: configuring a box

Today I attacked the challenge of configuring a space so that it fits with an adjacent room without making it look like a deliberate attempt at a match. I think I succeeded. Now if only I could find a seven-and-a-half foot butcherblock countertop.

iPhone365 #63: stuff

If you don't keep an eye on it, stuff quickly multiplies and takes over your home.

iPhone365 #62: sydney

I dropped off my brother, Sydney, at the airport this morning. He's going to a three-month training in Louisianna before heading to Afghanistan in November. By that time I will have two close family members in that country. I don't like that at all.

iPhone365 #61: wet

Crawling on the highway in an unusual late-August downpour in Sam Diego. A couple of lightning strikes were said to have started some brush fires in the back country. There's no running away from it: fires can start in both dry and wet weather.

iPhone365 #60: oiling wood

The last task for the day: oiling the island's top. For a surface that is supposed to take a lot of wear and tear, butcherblock tops require a lot of priming and maintenance. A stainless steel top might have been a better option for our kitchen, but it would make the space a little less "homey".

iPhone365 #59: paper moon

Having a quick bite of Swedish meatballs and ribs with Michael under a paper moon at IKEA before running in and grabbing a couple of bottles of mineral oil for the butcher block table.

Chewie and Eli sit, patiently waiting for me to open the door and let them in.

iPhone365 #57: nieces in the house

Pink loofah in the bathroom = girls in the house

I spent a nice evening with two of the prettiest girls in the world (my two nieces) who are in town with their mom to see their dad (my brother) off on his way to training in Louisianna to go to Afghanistan.

It was an evening of mixed emotions for me: happiness for reconnecting with my sibling and his family, and sadness to see how our national affairs tear military families apart.

iPhone365 #56: golden kiwi fruit

I've never had golden kiwi fruit before... didn't even know they existed. But the other day a coworker gave me one to try. She said, "Wait for a couple of days before eating it, but don't wait too long.". So today I had it with breakfast. It was perfect.

iPhone365 #55: buy or build?

I am window-shopping for lumber, wondering if I should invest the time and effort to build an awning over the deck or just buy another umbrella and stick it in the middle of the patio furniture. One one hand, it will be time-consuming but attractive; on the other hand it will be quick but conventional. In times like this I wish Bob was still in town. He would convince me to take the labor-intensive route. We would be whining and cursing through the whole project while having the best time while at it.

iPhone365 #54: true colors

Put three people together and ask them to pick what colors are masculine or feminine and you'll get three different answers. Then layer on top of it age, sex, and cultural background, and you'll end up with mayhem. Mayhem in the creative sense, of course -- healthy and stimulating.

iPhone365 #53: julie & julia

It was interesting how different an almost all-female audience gets into and reacts to a movie like Julie and Julia. Somehow it felt as if there was an immediate unspoken bond that made me feel as if I were an outsider.

iPhone365 #51: design

I unexpectedly picked up an interior design gig back at the old firm. Very brief, very temp, but a gig nonetheless. I hope to get more after this.

We went to see Twist tonight. The acrylic panels at the Diversionary Theater always mesmerize me.

iPhone365 #46: second chance

The last time we ate at an L&L Hawaiian Barbecue, it was a couple of years ago in Kaneohe, north of Honolulu. Michael got really sick from the meal and we haven't gone back to any L&L since then.

Until today. I thought I'd give it another try.

iPhone365 #42: antique row cafe

Having brunch with Michael and the boys -- Lyle, Ralph, Daniel, Matthew, and Hai. I was thinking of having a fruit bowl, but as I need energy for this afternoon's show, I decided to have four big fat slices of french toast drenched in high-fructose corn syrup. (Yes, any excuse is acceptable in my book.)

iPhone365 #41: in line

I am waiting to get a fresh haircut so I'd look decent for our concert tonight.
